I’mPowered Ghana is a Non-Govermental Organzation (NGO) focused on helping eradicate generational poverty through empowerment, education, housing and microfinance. Unlike other non-profits we want to provide the rod and not the fish!
I’mPowered Ghana believes that the best way to affect sustainable change is to tackle all the unique areas that perpetuate
poverty.
Rather than focus on a single issues, we’ve developed a model of integrated components that work across many sectors to bring deep and meaningful change. Our model focuses on empowerment, education, housing and microfinance.
We’ve partnered with SEWA Foundation to help educate the public and create awareness on the dangers of human trafficking and smuggling; and to ensure the provision of access to health care to less privileged children in Ghana.
Micro-finance Loans are small ($100-$300) loans provided to women to help start or expand a small business. This small seed capital allows a budding entrepreneur to open a stall in a market, creating a revenue stream with which to repay the loan and accrue savings. Funds are re-lent back into the community thereby creating continuous opportunities for growth. A micro-loan can completely change a family’s life.
I’mPowered Louisiana through LitPOWer is committed to decrease the illiteracy rate in Louisiana. The illiteracy rate in Louisiana is currently worse than the national average. The ability to read sets the foundation of who we are and what we are going to be. Think about it. With the ability to read, we can share information and ideas, communicate, learn and better ourselves. Now imagine you don't have this ability. Just thinking of the daily activities you wouldn't be able to do is scary.
This problem is real for people all over the nation.
• 36 million adults in the U.S. struggle with basic academic skills, making it difficult to function effectively as workers, parents,
citizens and consumers in today’s society.
• Adult education programs are a part of a suite of supports and services individuals need to build stronger, more
self- sustaining families, communities, and economies.
• Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72% chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.
These children are more likely to get poor grades, display behavioral problems, have high absentee rates, repeat school
years, or drop out.
• Parents with a high school diploma are 11% more likely to assist their children with homework..
• Information released by proliteracy.org says that the national illiteracy rate is at 15%.
• The rate in Louisiana is 20% and the rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is 25%. • These are the rates for just adults
who can't read.
• The problem starts at childhood with what parents teach their children. When adults improve their literacy skills,
the ripples extend to benefit their families, their communities, and beyond.
